FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION
A Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) is a test using a very thin needle and gentle suction to remove fluid or tissue from an area in the breast identified by ultrasound. It is performed under local anesthesia and requires no special preparation.

DURING THE PROCEDURE:
The area to be aspirated will be injected with a local anesthetic. The doctor will then identify the area and insert a needle to withdraw the fluid or tissue. These samples will then be sent to the pathologist for diagnosis. During the procedure you should try to lay still. You will be informed about what is happening and what you will need to do to assist with the procedure.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
After the procedure there may be a small amount of bleeding where the needle was placed. This will be treated initially with hand compression. Ice may be applied for swelling and bruising. You may notice some bruising of the area, which should resolve within 5-7 days. A band-aid has been placed over the biopsy site it may be removed the next day prior to your shower. You may return to your normal routine, including work. If you have any questions, please call our office at (717) 737-4718 The results of the biopsy should be available in 2-3 working days. We will contact you with the results and make plans for any necessary follow-up if plans have not already been made.
