CORE BIOPSY
A breast biopsy obtains small samples of breast tissue from the abnormal area of the breast as identified by ultrasound or palpation. An ultrasound may be used to guide the doctor to the area that is to be biopsied. It is performed under local anesthesia and requires no special preparation.

DURING THE PROCEDURE:
The area to be biopsied will be injected with a local anesthetic. The biopsy device will be placed in the breast to remove breast tissue. Each time a sample is obtained, you will hear a click. These samples will then be sent to the pathologist for diagnosis. During the procedure you should try to lay still. You will be informed about what is happening and what you will need to do to assist with the procedure.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
After the procedure there may be a small amount of bleeding where the biopsy needle was placed. This will be treated initially with hand compression. Ice will be applied to reduce swelling and bruising. You may notice some bruising of the area, which should resolve within 5-7 days. If you have any questions, please call our office at (717) 737-4718. If a band-aid has been placed over the biopsy site it may be removed the next day prior to your shower. If white strips have been placed over the area leave them in place for 5-7 days or until they fall off. Ice to the biopsy site can be used intermittently through out the day or you may take non-aspirin pain relievers such as Tylenol to relieve any discomfort you may have. Most patients have only minimal discomfort if any at all. You should continue to wear your bra day and night for the next 5-7 days after the procedure. If you are able to, you should take it easy for the first few hours after the procedure. You may return to your normal routine, including work, the next day. The results of the biopsy should be available in 2-3 working days. We will contact you with the results and make plans for any necessary follow-up if plans have not already been made.
